Gaza – in a digital space that is no longer neutral – where an algorithm can make a narrative disappear.
The Palestine Journalism Hub organized an interactive workshop with Ahmad Al-Qadi, Head of the Documentation Department at “7amleh “- The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media.
The workshop explored the growing digital challenges facing Palestinian journalists, particularly journalists in Gaza, including the impact of algorithms and platform policies on the visibility and reach of Palestinian content. It also addressed content censorship, restricted reach, account closures, digital security and the removal of digital materials, alongside practical ways to protect accounts and strengthen journalists’ digital security.
The session opened an important space for discussion around a fundamental question: How can we protect our Palestinian narrative in a digital space governed by platforms, corporations, and algorithms beyond our control?
Journalists in Gaza raised questions and shared experiences drawn from a reality in which the past three years have witnessed an alarming escalation in account closures, content restrictions, censorship, and the removal of materials. These measures have affected journalists, activists, and human rights defenders, directly impacting their ability to document events and bring what is happening on the ground to the world.
Amid war, the battle over the narrative is no longer fought only on the ground. It has also moved to screens, platforms, and algorithms—where protecting an account, preserving documentation, and ensuring that the truth reaches the public have become an integral part of protecting the narrative itself.
