The New Local Elections Law in Palestine 2026

The views of a number of candidates, experts, and representatives of political factions, as well as the Central Elections  Commission

This investigative report by journalist Monjed Jado was published on the Palestine News Network (PNN) and represents the first output of the Strengthening Independent Journalism and Media Networking in Palestine initiative, launched by the Palestine journalism Hub.
The investigation highlights key issues associated with the law, including restrictions on political freedoms, the complexity of the electoral system, and the reinforcement of clan-based dynamics, in addition to its potential impact on voter choices and the stability of local councils.

Critics argue that the law reshapes the democratic process in a restrictive way, while others see it as a step that   requires evaluation after implementation.

The report underlines the importance of in-depth investigative journalism as a tool for understanding public policies and strengthening accountability, while also highlighting the role of journalists in producing professional content that reflects societal issues with depth.

The Strengthening Independent Journalism and Media Networking in Palestine initiative, supported by the European Endowment for Democracy, aims to empower journalists to produce high-quality content in line with professional standards and to strengthen collaboration with local media institutions. This contributes to expanding publication reach and engaging wider audiences, while also promoting co-publishing and building effective media networks that reinforce the presence of independent journalism in the Palestinian society.
